About Burpengary: history and local economy

Burpengary sits between Morayfield, Narangba, Deception Bay and Burpengary East, with the Bruce Highway along its eastern edge and Burpengary Creek running through it. The name comes from the Aboriginal word burpengar, meaning "place of the green wattle". Europeans settled here in the 1870s, when timber cutting was the main industry, and the first school opened in 1876.

The town grew as a truck stop on the old North Coast Road, now the Bruce Highway, and has since become one of the region's faster growing residential areas. Around 16,500 people lived in Burpengary at the 2021 Census, up from 14,000 in 2016.

The local economy. Burpengary has a strong hands-on workforce. Trades and technical workers are the largest occupation group, followed by clerical and administrative staff, community and personal service workers and professionals, and hospitals, supermarkets, aged care and food services are major employers of locals. Burpengary Plaza is the main shopping hub, and around it you will find health practices, retailers, cafés, transport businesses, tradespeople and professional services, many of them run by local owners.
