Deception Bay sits on the south-eastern shore of the bay that gives it its name, between Burpengary, Narangba, North Lakes and Rothwell. The bay was named by explorer John Oxley in 1823, after he mistook it for the mouth of a river. Dr Joseph Bancroft arrived in 1881, and his heritage-listed sea baths remain a local landmark, along with Bancroft Park on the foreshore.
The suburb grew quickly from the late 1950s and was a substantial residential area by the 1980s. Around 19,600 people lived in Deception Bay at the 2021 Census.
The local economy. Deception Bay has a broad, hands-on economy. Community and personal service workers, technicians and trades workers, and labourers are among the most common occupations, and aged care and hospitals are major employers. MKT Square on Deception Bay Road is the main retail hub, and its 2023 expansion added Coles alongside a medical and dining precinct. Around it you will find carers, health practices, cafés, retailers, tradespeople and service businesses, many of them run by local owners.
