About North Lakes: history and local economy

North Lakes is a master-planned community about 34 km north of the Brisbane CBD, bounded by the Bruce Highway and Anzac Avenue. The land has a long working history: police horse breeding in the 1890s, then dairying, pineapples and pine plantations. Development of the 1,000 hectare community began in 1999, and North Lakes became its own suburb, separate from Mango Hill, in 2006.

It has grown into one of the largest communities in Moreton Bay, with around 23,000 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 35.

Westfield North Lakes opened in 2003 and has grown to around 274 stores, and IKEA opened its second Queensland store here in 2016.
