About Redcliffe: history and local economy

Redcliffe sits on the north-eastern side of the Redcliffe Peninsula, on the western shore of Moreton Bay. It is Ningy Ningy country. Matthew Flinders named Red Cliff Point in 1799, and in 1824 Redcliffe became the site of Queensland's first European settlement, a penal colony that moved to Brisbane a year later. The Hornibrook Bridge opened in 1935, Redcliffe was proclaimed a city in 1959, and the Bee Gees first performed here in 1959.

Around 10,500 people lived in Redcliffe at the 2021 Census, with a median age of 52.

The local economy. Redcliffe's economy is built on health, tourism and hospitality. Redcliffe Hospital is a major employer and is being significantly expanded, hospitals are the top industry of employment, and Redcliffe Parade's dining precinct, jetty and Sunday markets draw visitors year round. The Dolphins NRL club is based here too. Cafés, restaurants, health practices, retailers and service businesses make up much of the local business community.
